IBM Research center

The existing library at Catholic University was refurbished to accommodate the research centre. The works included demolishing of the existing structure and placing the new designs to suit architectural plans including an expo area for presentations & seminars.

The false roof is suspended on the portal frames since the room had to have clear spans. The court yards were to provide additional spaces to be used as outdoor relaxation areas.

Some of the existing trusses were reinforced to accommodate the additional load from the false ceiling. The 3 canopies were placed at the entrance to add on to the aesthetics. The were designed to be constructed on structural steel and to bear wind loads.

nanyuki cottage hospital

The project consisted of a two storey outpatient healthcare facility and a single storey maternity ward, theatre and staff housing. The structure was designed to be load bearing with clay tiles to match the existing structure. Construction was undertaken in two phases.

The first phase covered the administration and doctor’s offices together with an emergency wing, a theatre and a high level water tank. The second phase consisted of the maternity wing, men, women & children wards, laundry and a theatre for surgery.

The high incorporated water storage level tank was to provide sufficient water and pressure to serve the hospital, at a designated height of 12m. The walkways were spaced adequately to accommodate wheel chairs and large traffic during emergencies.

The project is happening in phases with the first phase already complete. The first phase was the office building that had two levels under the existing ground and the other two above ground.

The building was on challenging terrain and the lower floors were made up of reinforced concrete retaining walls that transferred the loading of the upper frame into the foundation.

It was also fitted with a lift whose one side of the shaft formed part of the retaining wall. One of the retaining walls was a curved wall that forms part of the second phases that is a church. This phase is currently ongoing.
